Nolvadex – tamoxifen is a popular and very effective selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that is often called an anti-estrogen. However, while it is an antagonist, it is also an agonist because it actually acts as an estrogen in certain parts of the body and as an anti-estrogen in others. As one of the oldest SERMs on the market that is still regularly used in medicine, although Nolvadex is also used by anabolic steroid users, it is not an anabolic steroid. This is an important observation because it is often confused by some to use it during steroid courses. Nolvadex is simply SERM.
What is Nolvadex – Tamoxifen? Overview
Nolvadex, officially known as tamoxifen citrate, was first developed in 1961 by ICI, now AstraZeneca, under the trade name Nolvadex. SERM was developed to treat breast cancer, especially hormone-dependent breast cancer. However, it has also been used effectively to prevent breast cancer. In addition, we have users of anabolic steroids, and it has long been found that Nolvadex has a place among such people. Nolvadex, as it is commonly called, can be used as an anti-estrogen during the anabolic steroid cycle to prevent estrogen-related side effects. It is also used as part of a post-cycle therapy (PCT) recovery plan, which is its most common and useful point of use for steroid users.
As we have already said, it is not quite clear why such similar drugs as Nolvadex and Clomid are in different demand among athletes. After all, not only are they structurally similar, but they are both classified as estrogen receptor antagonists. That is, from a scientific point of view, these drugs have the closest possible effect, more or less equal in both power and effectiveness. Besides, both substances are capable at the same time both to block influence of an estrogen, and to act as an estrogen itself if it is necessary (the given bilateral influence proceeds in various tissues).
On a course Clomid and Nolvadex act as anti-estrogenic preparations, i.e. they prevent negative influence of estrogens on a chain GGY. At the same time, they induce our body to produce gonadotropins. As a result, our body increases the amount of synthesized LH, which in turn leads to an increase in natural testosterone production. Both Clomid and Nolvadex can boast of this effect, but athletes continue to bend their line, choosing only one particular drug for recovery after the end of steroids, and that is tamoxifen.
Nolvadex and its opponent on the course
But that’s not all that scientists have learned. During experiments aimed at stimulating gonadoliberin synthesis, it was found that the drugs mentioned above have completely different effects. So maybe athletes are not wrong to think that Nolvadex is a more powerful drug, and in general that it should be taken for other purposes than clomiphene? Let’s find out.
In the tests, volunteers were injected with 100 mcg of gonadoliberin each and the amount of LH synthesized was measured. Thus, scientists were trying to find out how much the sensitivity of the pituitary gland to this substance changes when Nolvadex or the analogous clomiphene is administered. This was done for one simple reason: as is known, the more sensitive the pituitary gland is, the more LH is synthesized and, consequently, the higher the level of secreted testosterone. This means that the more effectively the drug promotes the action of gonadoliberin, the more it affects the recovery of male hormone levels.
The test results are as follows: taking Nolvadex for 10 days increased the sensitivity of the pituitary gland to gonadoliberin by several times compared to the normal levels. Clomiphene, in turn, had the opposite effect. That is, the pituitary gland sensitivity decreased the contrary while taking it. The dosage of Nolvadex and the rival drug were taken with comparable strength (20 and 50 mg). The result of all of the above is simple: Tamoxifen is better at increasing the sensitivity of the pituitary gland and, therefore, has a greater effect on LH and testosterone secretion in the male body than its competitor.

Functions and Features of Nolvadex – Tamoxifen
Tamoxifen citrate is a SERM that has the properties of both an estrogen agonist and an estrogen antagonist. As an anti-estrogen, Nolvadex acts by binding to estrogen receptors instead of estrogen. This binding prevents the estrogen hormone from acting in certain parts of the body, which is why it is useful for breast cancer patients. Many forms of breast cancer are actually fueled by estrogen when it attaches to receptors in the breast. By preventing such receptors from attaching, it also protects anabolic steroid users from the gynecomastia that can be caused by aromatizing anabolic steroids such as testosterone, Dianabol, and to some extent nandrolone and boldenone.
Although Nolvadex is primarily seen as an anti-estrogen, it also has the ability to act as an estrogen, especially in the liver. This has the advantage that estrogen activity in the liver is associated with healthier cholesterol levels. For the steroid user, this can be extremely helpful because many anabolic steroids tend to have a negative effect on cholesterol. More on this later when we look at the direct effects of Nolvadex.
Although Nolvadex is primarily an anti-estrogen, it also has strong testosterone stimulating properties. Nolvadex has the ability to block the negative feedback caused by estrogen in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. As a result, it stimulates an increased release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) by the pituitary gland. Both LH and FSH are necessary for the natural production of testosterone. Without LH and FSH, with an even stronger emphasis on LH, there is no natural testosterone production.
Nolvadex – tamoxifen is a drug prescribed to treat breast cancer. Some athletes and bodybuilders also use it as a “fat burner.” It supposedly helps the body get rid of fat by blocking the estrogen receptors. This drug is available by prescription only.
